Mooting at the University of Bradford:

How to Get Involved

Every year we enter a number of mooting competitions. Over the years we have been involved in the OUP/BPP Nationals, the NSLS Nationals, the ESU/Essex Court nationals, the regional Beechcroft Competition (in which we finished as losing finalists in 2012/13), the Lincoln's Inn Competition, and we have facilitated entrance into the Herbert Freeman/Times Law Moot. We run our own internal competitions in order to find our team members for the national competitions and we run a mooting masterclass, with the assistance of our lovely lecturers, to explain mooting and whip up student interest.

Mooting isn't easy, it requires much dedication and isn't all that good for your nerves, but the benefits are always worth it, win or lose. The UB Law Society and our Lecturing Staff provide excellent support for students who want to be involved. We take care of administrative matters; pay for travel, printing and reams of paper and other stationery; coach participants and develop arguments and we give you a huge amount of kudos which you can exploit at your pleasure amongst your peers.

Mooting Masterclass

At the start of every academic year we run a Mooting Masterclass. These sessions are always well received and enable students to get to grips with the rules, understand how to be a successful mooter, what pitfalls should be avoided, how to deal with interventions from the Judges and answer your questions. We then stage a short example moot led by former Bradford mooters and judged by a lecturer using a typical mooting scenario. This shows potential participants what a moot is like, how to make submissions and how to create your bundles of legal authorities.

2016/17 Competitions

We have entered the OUP/BPP competition, the ESU/Essex Court competition, the National Speed Mooting Competition, and will be looking to enter the NSLS competition should it be running. We will also run our internal mooting competition to enable all students who are interested to get involved. We also hope to stage some friendly moots with neighbouring Universities, and one has been lined up with Leeds Beckett in Oct. 2016.
